2020 was rough on everyone. Whether you had to work at home for months or worked from the office, work just wasn’t what it used to be. Add to that the extra stress of a pandemic and many people realised that what they were doing wasn’t their dream job. Others unfortunately got laid off. If you’re one of those people looking for new opportunities, it can be hard to decide what you want to do for the rest of your life. And do you choose your passion or are you rather tempted to choose a job in a very stable industry? In this article, we talk about 3 industries that are always looking for employees.

Become tech-oriented

Have you always been good with computers? Then it might be a good idea to start learning to code. Every business needs someone with IT knowledge, from the major tech firms in Silicon Valley to the company next door. Knowing how to build websites or new programs is a major strong competence on your resume and when you’re good at it, you can make decent money. Check out online courses about IT skills; for instance, on Coursera, you can find free courses that are usually offered at universities.

Go work offshore

Do you like making good money, having many days off and do you not mind not seeing your family daily? Then it might be a good idea to check out offshore jobs. For instance, oil and gas companies are always looking for engineers, drillers and derrickmen. These jobs pay very well, but require you to work in shifts. For example, there will be three weeks of working followed by three weeks of having time off onshore. Unfortunately you can’t start working the day after you get hired. Because working at sea can be dangerous, your employer will make you participate in some safety courses such as an OPITO course, or require a certain certification such as the H2S certification.

Start consulting

If you’re great at your job, but tired of doing the work yourself, consulting might be something for you. Companies are always looking for advice on how to optimize their workforces. Consultants can make good money advising companies on how to tackle certain problems. Most consultancy companies have a roster of business and management consultants, but there are also marketing consultants, IT consultants, etc. If there’s something you’re really good at, you can probably use it to make a living.

Good luck with your new career!
