Tell us a little bit about yourself.

Dr. Holland-Kornegay: “I am an entrepreneur at heart, as well as a Mental Health Professional, and Philanthropist. I love helping others! It’s my passion and I purpose! I recently launched the new website, TashaGuru.com.”

What do you enjoy most about your profession?

Dr. Holland-Kornegay: “I like to see people overcome what they see as obstacles as well as what brings them peace.”

What was the inspiration for your company?

Dr. Holland-Kornegay:Margaret’s Box was inspired by wonderful grandmother, Margaret. She played a huge role in my life.

I want to help inspire others with Margaret’s Box. The product plays off the idea of the traditional vision board. I want all who come into contact with Margaret’s Box to feel the presence of that love and care that my grandmother gave, so I developed a therapeutic curriculum to help guide the participants to that place of accomplishment with love and care.”

What is a typical day like for you?

Dr. Holland-Kornegay: “My day starts at 8:00 AM.  I have scheduled sessions up until 1 PM. I generally have lunch from 1-2 PM. I allow 15 minutes of meditation for the purpose of self-care. Then I start my last round of sessions from 2:30-6 PM.”

Tell us about your community involvement. What are you passionate about outside of work and home and how do you participate?

Dr. Holland-Kornegay: “I started an HIV/AIDS nonprofit (Partners Against Sexually Transmitted Diseases). One of the difficulties I had was raising money.

I was trying to figure out ways to raise funding for HIV/AIDS awareness after writing grant after grant with little success. Then one day, my teen son had a bright idea, he said: Mom maybe you need to raise your own funds?” Kids can say the smartest things. After continuing to discuss this option with him, he came up with the idea to sell cotton candy. He began to call out cool flavors in a kidding kind of way.

I was excited to get started with raising awareness along with funding. After coming up with the company’s name and logo, the signature bowties and fun colorful outfits, I was ready to promote social change by having a conversation about HIV/AIDS in a fun, active, and non-threatening way. Oscar William’s (our cartoon logo guy) signature bow tie is red, symbolizing HIV/AIDS.

Oscar William’s Gourmet Cotton Candy launched in April 2013. I used social media to reach people. I immediately promoted HIV/AIDS awareness action using Facebook. Facebook’s Marketing Team was so impressed with the story, they reached out to me. Facebook sent a camera crew to my home for two days to learn all about the project, and how I was promoting it, and executing social change in my community.

I am able to engage with consumers on Facebook about the product and promote HIV/AIDS education. It is awesome to bring this message out to communities using different communication channels, such as the use of Cotton Candy.”

What is the biggest risk you ever took professionally or the biggest obstacle you have overcome?

Dr. Holland-Kornegay: “We recently purchased our new home (on a farm) that is some distance away from where I have built my business relationships. Initially, I was afraid there would be a disconnect because I wouldn’t be as visible in the community in which I have worked so hard to help. But, it turns out others were inspired and applauded the move. Now, I am looked at as the go-to person for forward thinking. The farm move was smart; we were able to obtain a 22-acre farm, as well as a 1936 farmhouse at a price that is unheard of these days.”

From where do you draw inspiration?

Dr. Holland-Kornegay: “When I was a young child, I spent the summers with my grandmother in North Carolina. I was traveling from New York, so I always looked forward to the change of scenery. During my summers, I would go with my grandmother to work. She was a housekeeper. Most of her duties consisted of ironing piles and piles of clothes. I always wondered how she did the work.  But she never complained (this stuck with me), and was thankful for a chance to have employment. The image of the piles of clothes has stayed with me into my adult life. When there’s a challenge, I think about the piles of clothes and my grandma.”

Who has been your role model or mentor?

Dr. Holland-Kornegay: “My wonderful grandmother! She was tough as nails!”

What do you do for fun or to relax?

Dr. Holland-Kornegay: “Spending time with my family and friends. And practicing daily meditation.”
