Askanya Haitian Chocolate Factory Co-Founder Walks Us Through Her Journey with a University of Michigan Documentary Series
The University of Michigan visited Haiti and shadowed Entrepreneur and Co-Founder of Les Chocolateries Askanya and Michigan Engineering alumna Corinne Joachim-Sanon. Les Chocolateries Askanya or Askanya for short is a premium bean-to-bar chocolate “Grown in Haiti, Made in Haiti, Enjoyed Everywhere”.
In “The Sweet Side of Engineering”, a documentary series filmed in Haiti and produced by the University of Michigan, Corinne Joachim-Sanon walks us through the process of purchasing cacao and transforming it into chocolate. Prior to being an Entrepreneur, she worked for major corporations in The United States. But the Haitian native was nagged by a different kind of ambition. She wanted to run her own business creating jobs in her home country. After 10 years of working as an engineer and a business consultant, at 29 years old Corinne invested most of her and her husband’s savings to start a chocolate factory in rural Haiti.
