Interview with Communications Coach Edith Paul
Your communication style can positively change the world. All around the world, there is growing concern about the way we speak to each other. According to recent studies in the US and Australia, our interactions with each other, in public and online, have become progressively more angry and divisive. Meanwhile, as the public insults and abuse escalate, our children are wishing the world could be kinder.
Edith Paul, a communications coach and Right Voice for You facilitator has a simple question for us all as we start the New Year: is it possible to make 2018 a kinder year, simply by communicating differently?
“These days, people want to be heard, and they have come to believe the best way for them to be heard is to be the most ‘right.’ So many are out there trying to shout the loudest, but if everyone is clamoring to be heard, who is listening? Who is validating?” she says.
“We have lost the art of being “present” to others – we are talking at them, rather than with them. Be interested: listen to others, remain open to them, and acknowledge their viewpoint,” she explains. “You don’t have to agree with them, but when you acknowledge their point of view, this unconsciously de-stabilizes and disarms people, because they are not often used to being received this way, and creates a better opportunity for them to hear your side of the story.”
