Worrying about how you are protected online and when using your devices is a top priority for everyone these days. We use our phones constantly to check our emails, browse the internet, and even to access corporate data. This means we have to work hard to keep our sensitive information private and keep it out of the wrong hands. One of the biggest threats to mobile users is phishing.

What is phishing?

Phishing is fraudulent activity which is happening. In a way it’s a bit similar to regular fishing as the criminals are using bait to try and get you to bite. Basically, phishing is a way to steal your personal data. This data can include; usernames, passwords and your bank details. Phishing is often disguised by appearing to be from trustworthy companies; this could be either posing as a bank or even a trusted site like Facebook. Phishing often comes in the format of an email, such as one unlawfully requesting a W-2 form. However, reputable institutions like banks will never ask for your details over an email. It will often direct the victim to put their personal data into a site which resembles the website they are posing. They send these links through emails and social media networks.

How you can protect yourself?

You can protect yourself by being vigilant and keeping a wary eye on things. Never trust links which are sent to you in emails, even if these emails appear to be from trusted institutions or even people you know. You may even want to get mobile security from companies such as Lookout UK. This will ensure that you are protected always and will allow you to browse with peace of mind. Getting protection from security companies can help eliminate the threat of phishing.

Other ways you can keep yourself safe is by not entering your personal details on dodgy sites that are not operating on a secure browser. You will also want to avoid using public Wi-Fi. This is because when you are using public Wi-Fi, it leaves you on an unsecure network making it easier for people to steal your personal details.
