Are you preparing to make your first video montage? Hopefully, you’ll have the opportunity to read our video creation basics before you start editing. It can be a daunting task at the start, which can lead to many mistakes being made; only experience will really help. You might need special converting software like an online video converter to convert mp4 to AVI, VOB to MP4 and so on. However, some errors can be fixed by implementing changes which will give your video production a more professional ‘look’. In truth we all make mistakes, and often the best techniques that come up are the result of mistakes.

That being said, here are the 4 most seen video editing errors that you can easily fix to give your videos a real boost.

#1 – Poor quality soundtrack

If editing is new to you, this may be difficult to understand. On the ‘timeline’ of your video, there will usually be two or three audio components: music, a voice-over and the soundtrack of your video clip. Beginners in video editing often have their background music track too powerful; this may overshadow other scenes. Ensure that the background music stays lower than your voices. And give great importance to the soundtrack during your final editing.

Make sure to really listen to your video. If you don’t like the result, you will need to adjust the soundtrack regardless of the image quality. Most video editing software has track-by-track loudness control. Adjust the intensities until the voices and background blend harmoniously, one not taking precedence over the other.

#2 – The clean cut or jump of image

Each mounting technique must be used wisely. Image skipping is an effective method to achieve the purpose of a montage — to compress time. Image jumps save time and advance the scenario. But they are often overused by beginners. This is especially true when you shoot a single shot and remove a piece of it, which results in your character appearing to have magically moved to a new position in the same scene.

Explore other mounting options. For example, add another angle of view, and splice to a new angle in the scene, or provide an additional transition to distract the viewer. Many different cutting and joining techniques are used by video editing professionals, and you will need to learn how to use them before you go ahead and make your videos.

#3 – Transition mess-ups

This video editing error occurs when the length of your transition is greater than the previous sequence. During a transition, the preceding sequence ends and a black screen appears before the start of the next sequence.

Make sure that the previous sequences are long enough or adjust the duration of your transitions. Some software allow you to easily cut your video sequences. Once you have set the correct length of your sequences, simply insert the transition by drag and drop. You can identify incomplete transitions using “wipe transitions”. You just need to extend the sequences.

#4 – Music is not suitable

Have you ever seen a video mixing soft music and very fast-paced images, or vice versa? Dynamic editing techniques and quick camera movements should be accompanied by loud music. Make sure when you are editing that each of your scenes is associated with a suitable musical background.

Focus on editing your footage first, then find the music that matches each of your scenes. There are a large number of royalty free music sites you can tap into. Most of them have a search engine by genre and tempo, which will allow you to find the right song for each sequence.
