Ed Begley Jr. is a legendary actor who is currently starring on ABC’s Bless This Mess and recurring on Modern Family, Better Call SaulArrested Development, and more. A Golden Globe and 7x Emmy nominee, this renowned film and television star is also the creator and owner of Begley’s Earth Responsible Cleaning Products! He is making great strides in helping to protect the Earth and is one of the country’s most-respected environmentalists.

Home Business Magazine recently caught up with Ed and asked him about his role on Bless This Mess and what inspired him to launch his line of eco-conscious cleaning products. The esteemed actor also shared his top tip for those looking to get into the acting industry and insight on how home business owners can be more Earth-friendly.

HBM: Tell us about your role in ABC’s Bless This Mess. What drew you to the show?

EB: “Two words: Liz Meriwether. I was a fan of New Girl, so when I heard about her teaming with Lake Bell (another huge talent I greatly admired), I was all in. I play Rudy, the guy who lives in Mike (Dax Shepard) and Rio’s (Lake Bell) barn. Rudy gets to have a relationship with Constance (Pam Grier), so what else could an actor ask for?”
HBM: What tips do you have for those who want to get into the acting industry?
EB: “You have to work hard by taking classes. Start out by doing theater to get experience. Actors act, so make sure you train extensively before you pursue it professionally.”
HBM: You are also the creator of Begley’s Earth Responsible Products. Tell us about them!
EB: “I’ve used baking soda, vinegar, and water for years in lieu of harsh cleaners, but I wanted something even more effective that used even more natural ingredients. I wanted to create products that I could share with others that would benefit the planet, not harm it. I met my friend, Mark Cunningham at Lab Clean, and we decided to partner on a line of nontoxic products. With that, Begley’s was born.”
HBM: What inspired you to launch your own brand of eco-friendly products?
EB: “I thought there was the need for environmentally-friendly and effective cleaning products that should be offered at a good price. I think that is what we offer.”
HBM: What has been the greatest challenge you’ve overcome in launching your company? Your greatest achievement thus far?
EB: “I was very fortunate to partner with a guy named Mark Cunningham at Lab Clean, as he was already up and running. He has a reputable company that is very established and has the capabilities of making high-quality sustainable products. He had done all the heavy lifting and setting up the company with his partners already. I simply walked in and joined the team. I really didn’t have any major challenges because of Mark. My greatest achievement so far is probably the satisfaction and pride in knowing that the cleaning products we have created are really effective and they are so great for our planet.”
HBM: How do you balance your cleaning essentials business with everything else you have going on?
EB: “I’m very busy with my acting career these days, and I’m very grateful for that. I have an amazing team that helps me keep my career on track and another team that helps with the products. It’s all about having good partners. You can also delegate sometimes and make the time you do spend really count. There’s nothing more important than good partners, and I’m lucky to have them!”
HBM: How can home business owners be more eco-friendly each day?
EB: “We have so many green choices as business owners: How we ship and pack our products. How we power our office space and and factories. What kind of vehicle we drive. What kind of paper we use, if at all. There are so many choices. My advice would be to go online and look for alternative ways of running your home businesses that are more environmentally friendly. Start with the low hanging fruit before you tackle the big ones. Computers make it easier to not have to print using paper. Recycle the paper you do use. Shut off electronics when you are not using them. Use compact fluorescent light bulbs. Start with the easy things and work forward.”
