Interview with Celebrity Hairstylist & Tech Entrepreneur Katy Q.

Katy Q.

Katy Q. is a celebrity hair stylist and tech entrepreneur who has co-founded the first celebrity hair styling booking app, called Styl3Insta.com. Throughout her career as a celebrity hair stylist, she has worked with Hailey Baldwin, Zac Efron, Justin Bieber, model Caroline Forsling, fashion blogger Christina Caradona, and countless other young Hollywood stars. Her work has also been featured in top magazines such as Grazia, ELLE, GQ, and more.

HBM: Can you tell our readers about your background?

Katy Q.: “I grew up in Bondi Beach, Australia, and spent the earlier days of my career working for some of today’s most well-known celebrity hair stylists. Shortly thereafter, I went to New York City and I began working with Laurent D. Laurent, the owner of the global salon brand, Privé. While working at Privé, I’ve learned what it takes to run a successful salon from the ground up.”

HBM: What is the Styl3Insta.com booking app?

Katy Q.: “Styl3insta.com is the first marketplace where consumers can book celebrity hair stylists in any neighborhood in New York City. They can book in-salon, at home, or at their hotel rooms services. The app is available on iOS and Android.

And recently, we just launched a membership program where consumers can purchase unlimited haircuts, blow drys, as well as shampoo and conditioning treatments in a luxury salon environment with a celebrity stylist for just $169.00 per month! It’s an amazing deal for anyone who likes to get their hair done without spending a ton of money.”

HBM: What are some hurdles you overcame when launching your business?

Katy Q.: “The tech and app spaces are super competitive today so it’s important that we offered something different from all of the other salon booking apps out there. We simply differentiated the Styl3Insta.com platform by being the first app ever to allow consumers to book hair appointments with celebrity hair stylists and colorists. We also offer salon bookings that allow consumers to pay in the salon after the appointment, book hotel and house calls, as well as appointments for weddings.”

HBM: What’s the biggest challenge to running a business?

Katy Q.: “There really is no one biggest challenge. Businesses are faced with many challenges daily, and so it’s the entrepreneur’s job to identify the right problems to focus on at the time as well as think analytically. That way, the entrepreneur can remain calm and make the best possible choices for their business with the resources and tools they have available.”

HBM: What are your hobbies? How do you like to relax?

Katy Q.: “I love to spend time with the family, go to the beach, teach my daughter to swim (it’s been so much this summer), and take my dog, Charles to the park. I’m also a huge foodie. I love trying new restaurants.”

HBM: Do you have advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?

Katy Q.: “Yes, follow your passion, don’t be afraid to take calculated risks, and know how to prioritize your schedule. Additionally, focus on thing at a time and try not to get caught up in things that are beyond your control.”

HBM: Where do you see your business in three years?

Katy Q.: “While we plan to expand our unlimited monthly membership program in New York City throughout the next several months, we plan on adding more celebrity hair stylists to the Styl3Insta.com platform to meet the growing demand for our regular in salon or at home bookings. We may roll it out to other markets in the next several years.

We are also in the process of developing and testing another app for the home living and hospitality spaces, which we plan to roll out later this year or next year.”
