Year after year, Sundance Film Festival brings inspiring, avant-garde movies to the forefront of cinematic culture. This year, one film stood out as a must-see for all Sundance 2017 attendees: Wilson, directed by Craig Johnson and starring Laura Dern, Judy Greer, and Woody Harrelson. In the film, Harrelson plays Wilson, a lonely and hilariously honest middle-aged misanthrope who reunites with his estranged wife (Dern) and gets a shot at happiness when he finds out he has a teenage daughter he has never met.
The movie centers on the uniquely outrageous and slightly twisted way that Wilson sets out to find common ground with his daughter. Home Business Magazine had the opportunity to attend the red carpet premiere of Wilson to see what the buzz was all about. At the premiere, actresses Laura Dern, Judy Greer, and Isabella Amara each stopped by on the red carpet to share their top acting tips and insight on what Wilson was all about.
First off, Home Business Magazine caught up with Laura Dern on the red carpet. The Academy Award-nominated actress shared her top tip for aspiring actors and actresses:
“Dig as deep as you can to look at every other option possible. (laughs) Explore your university and high school for all things that interest you and then know it’s the only thing you want to do,” Laura said.
Actress Judy Greer (who plays a dog walker) also stopped by on the red carpet and shared what it was like working on Wilson.
“It was kind of like going to work every day with your best friends or like going to summer camp, where everything is so fun and you love it. It was very fun,” she said.
She went on to chat about her character in the film.
“My character in the film is Shelly, who is Wilson’s dog walker,” Greer shared. “Most of my scenes were with Woody so, unfortunately, I didn’t have any scenes with Laura Dern or Isabella Amara. I’ve always wanted to work with Woody–he was definitely a bucket list for me. He exceeded expectations.”
And did she have any acting tips to share?
“It’s rough out there! (laughs) In the same sense, I would say it’s really hard right now, but there’s also more content than ever before. On the flipside, there are no more lines or rules and I would say that for any actor, just start writing your own stuff and keep writing,” the talented actress said.
Isabella Amara (who plays Harrelson’s teenage daughter) also chatted with Home Business Magazine on the red carpet. She was happy to share what it was like working on the film.
“My favorite part about working on Wilson was the fact that it is really hard to be on a set where everyone gets along and everyone is allowed to be creative and flexible.” she said. “Everyone in this film’s cast and crew got along and loved each other. We became a giant family! Every week was kind of like school, as we were all really excited to see each other and we constantly hung out. We went to Woody’s friend’s lake house all the time and it was so much fun. Everyone was just so warm and loving.”
She went on to share the message that she wants people to take away from the film.
“I want people to realize that it’s okay to be themselves and it’s okay if bad things happen, because that is life. You move on… as long as you make the best of things and you try to have a positive attitude about it, whether you’re a realist or a pessimist, as long as you try to make the best of things, everything will turn out fine,” Isabella shared.
