Much like if you were looking at a map and trying to decide where to go on holiday, you may well have the same problem when deciding on a hospitality career. The list includes, but is not limited to: hotels, hostels, campsites, restaurants, clubs, bars, catering events, cruise ships, airlines, tour guides, concert venues, and many more.
As you can see, there are a lot of fantastic roles to choose within the hospitality sector, but if you’re still somehow on the fence as to whether it’s a good industry to get involved in, then let us provide you with a few good reasons as to why you should consider this area.
The world is your office – If you have the desire to travel, then hospitality will provide you with even more chances to explore and discover new parts of the world. The aforementioned cruise ships and airlines are perhaps the best example of traveling hospitality jobs, but there are also ski resorts or overseas festivals where you can land a role that’s both adventurous and helps to further your C.V.
Climb the ladder – Speaking of your resume, the skills you learn in any hospitality job can be transferred and any experience you gain can simply bolster your chances of getting hired. In hospitality, it’s evident that the harder you work and the more seriously you take your role, the higher you can climb the corporate ladder, should you want to. Hotels, especially the well-known GCH group, are notorious for this kind of path, as starting as a receptionist and working up to be a senior manager is more common than you may think. After gaining plenty of experience, you could even start your own hotel one day!
A lot of variation – Every role in hospitality is very different, but there is one thing which unites them all: no two days are the same. Unique challenges face employees at every turn, whether it’s sorting out some customer drama or arriving in a brand new, exotic location. One thing’s for sure, you’ll find that customers and patrons are often very appreciative of those who work in hospitality, and even if that’s a heartfelt “thank you” or a sizeable tip, you’re definitely an important piece of the puzzle.
Flexibility – For some, the idea of working a 9-5, Monday to Friday, is perfect and the kind of schedule they love. For others, they crave some flexibility and diversity when it comes to the hours and days they work. Hospitality roles certainly offer a lot of scope for different agendas, which often suit students or even those wanting a second job.
Meeting people – In a hospitality role, you’ll often find that your colleagues will quickly become good friends, as you all spend so much time together and are working towards the same goals. Plus, there are many opportunities to spend time with your new friends outside of work, especially when you’re employed by an airline or cruise ship company. Of course, you need great people skills to work in hospitality, but if this is an area that you want to work on and learn to come out of your shell, then you have the chance.
If all this isn’t enough to sway you, then keep in mind that the hospitality sector is only set to grow and there are so many roles to be filled by capable, adventurous people.
