The first question that pops to your mind when you are out to buy an engagement ring is, “What should be the size of the stone?” It is generally believed by many that a big diamond is ideal. People gush when they see a big stone on the finger. But is it the right size; is it one size fits all? Well, we are about to find out now!

Generally it is believed that a one carat diamond is the right size for an engagement ring. However, the right size depends on your budget. If you have a sizable budget you can opt for a 3 carat diamond and if you have a smaller budget you can even opt for a 0.5 carat diamond. But before finalizing the diamond it is better to get acquainted with the 4Cs of buying a diamond. The 4Cs are carat, cut, clarity and colour.

Carat:

The carat weight is equated by people with size. When they see a large rock they immediately think that the diamond must be a lot of carats. You can dazzle your beloved by buying a diamond from 1-3 or 4 carats. It all depends on the budget you have as I already mentioned.

Cut:

The beauty of a diamond is in the dazzle and a proper cut will ensure that the effect is dazzling. If a diamond is not cut properly, it will not be as dazzling and it will be cheaper too. A well cut diamond will always be on the costlier side, because what are diamonds for if they do not sparkle properly.

Colour:

Diamonds are found in various colours such as white, yellow, brown and even grey. The whiter the diamond the costlier it is. If you want to impress your beloved then always opt for a dazzling white diamond. If you cannot buy a D grade diamond which is considered the whitest then you can opt for an F or J grade which will be a little less priced.

Clarity:

One of the most important C’s is clarity. Clarity does not mean totally blemish free because it is very difficult to find such a diamond, but it means that you get a diamond with less blemishes and the blemished do not block light flow.

If you base your search for a diamond on the 4Cs then you will surely be able to buy a wonderful diamond for your beloved. If you have a good budget then opt for a bigger diamond and if you have a lesser budget then you can opt for a big diamond with a few blemishes as it will be less costly. However, remember that even a small diamond which is white and is free of blemishes will be costly and worth more than a big diamond with blemishes. Or you can plan on a different shape for your diamond so that it not only augments the stone it also makes it look bigger. The marquise shape is quite popular as well as the pear shape.

But for most couples the size of the stone does not matter as long as the heart is in the right place. It is the thought that matters and hence opt for a stone within your budget, she will surely love it.
