The cost of travel is one of the main expenses small businesses struggle with, as flights, hotels and transfers continue to fluctuate in price. When it comes to business travel, there are some tips you can follow to cut down costs, without sacrificing comfort or reliability.

Get the Best Flight Deals

Whilst business class flights have luxurious appeal, with the inflight entertainment, comfortable seating and silver service, is it worth the extra expense? Sure, if you’re travelling long haul, the extra comfort could be beneficial. If not, then coach is more than adequate, especially on modern aeroplanes with all the amenities.

Choose Your Accommodation Wisely

When it comes to accommodation, a great way to save money is to choose a place that’s close to where you’re going. This will ensure you save money on taxi fares. Another top tip is to opt for an apartment, rather than a hotel, so you can cook for yourself without sacrificing your everyday regime.

Compare, Compare, Compare

You can use travel comparison sites, like Compare & Choose, to make sure that you get the best possible deals on your flights and accommodation. You can even pin multiple comparison sites against each other to refine the results even further.

Book in Advance

Sometimes, in business, things just happen out the blue and you’ll need to get somewhere tomorrow. However, if you can help it, book in advance as this can save you some serious cash. Last-minute reservations tend to sky-rocket in price.

Collect Loyalty Points

If you stay with the same hotel chain, or become a frequent flyer with one airline, then you will be able to collect points. Over time, these points will gain cash value, so you’ll be able to get the odd trip free of charge. Some booking sites also offer Nectar card points, so you can save as you book.

Travel Light

Often, budget airlines will charge extra to add baggage. Save yourself some money and pack only the essentials in your suitcase. Travelling with hand luggage is also much more efficient, as you can get in and out of the airport quickly. Just be sure to check the airline’s hand luggage restrictions first!

Be Smart with Transfers

If you’re travelling to one location for an extended period, it may work out as better value to hire a car, rather than paying for transfers, cabs and public transport. Review these options in advance of your trip to ensure you get the best deal possible.

Beat Jet Lag

Don’t be caught out by jet lag and ensure your sleep schedule is in line with your destination, stay hydrated and don’t overindulge in food, alcohol or caffeine. After all, time is money.

Be Productive

Speaking of time being money, make sure you’re productive when you travel. While it’s tempting to enjoy the inflight entertainment, you can maximise your efficiency by working during travel time.

Eat Smart

Dining out every night can stretch your wallet as well as your waistline, so avoid the extra pounds (or lbs) by stopping off at local markets for your food. Ideally, if you can secure accommodation with a kitchen area, you can cook. Otherwise, try not to stray far from your usual routine.
