Founder Humphrey Yang, previously worked at a large mobile-gaming company “Machine Zone” in the tech space and focused on creating unique user experiences for a large player bases (1 million gamers and up). He came up with the idea for custom map prints a couple of years ago, after traveling through Europe and noticing boutique shops carry maps of their respective regions, he was inspired to bring custom maps of anywhere in the world to anyone. It wasn’t until he had more time did he decide to put his idea into action, which was this year.
“Many shops will carry maps or map posters of their own regions, but typically the maps are produced at large scale and are limited to bigger cities, bigger regions. What I wanted to capture was the ability to get a custom street-map in tons of different colors of ANYWHERE, which meant the inclusion of small towns and cities that may not get the exposure they deserve. With that in mind, I created YourOwnMaps, which would utilize an open source map database to allow for any place in the world to be mapped, and subsequently printed and shipped to customers!”
Since the inception of the idea earlier this year, the product went live in the early Spring and has been gaining traction ever since. YourOwnMaps even plans on expanding their offerings of products in the coming months to smaller sizes, star/constellation maps, and more!
