Always an avid reader, owner and designer Michelle Wolett found herself constantly inspired by books. After reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, Wolett found herself in a different world when reading the book and once it was over, she immediately became motivated. What if we could create something that makes you feel like you were physically a part of that world? You would become so engrossed by your book and then open a package to find an item that was just mentioned in it! It would feel like the reader is actually there. Brainstorming new ideas, Wolett came up with Once Upon A Book Club!
“Each box takes months of preparation. Every detail mentioned in the book is thought over to find the perfect spots to insert a gift”, Wolett describes. “Subscribers can expect gifts to be anything from the book. It can be a piece that relates to that particular era, a journal that the character is writing in, a vase that used to hide something. We search something significant to the story line, to really make the reader feel like they have been pulled in and help tell the story first hand.”
This popular book club has been featured on The Today Show, Red Tricycle, Bustle, Hello Subscription, BuzzFeed, Life & Style, InStyle and more.
According to an article in the NY Post, over 5 million Americans belong to book clubs. In recent years, book clubs have seemingly skyrocketed in popularity. Bustle talks about this growth by saying, “What was once associated with either grouchy academics or wine moms has now become an activity for all kinds of folks. There are cookbook book clubs, biography book clubs, digital book clubs, national book clubs — pick a theme and somewhere, someone is reading a book with that very specific demographic of people. And it’s totally understandable — there’s something deeply satisfying in sharing the same book, the same story, the same world, with a host of other people. Hearing their own impressions and experiences. Maybe even looking at a chapter, a character, even a single passage in a new light after your neighbor completely blows your mind with a new perspective.”
BuzzFeed featured OUABC and as a summer essential saying, “Commit to reading just one book a month this year and with a subscription from Once Upon A Book Club. Take some time away for yourself and enter the magical world of reading that Once Upon a Book Club has created.”
Wolett says that each month the team carefully selects specific items pulled from the book to enhance the reading experience. “We want the reader to feel as though they are experiencing the story first hand. Is a character in the book hiding a valuable necklace in an old tin can? It is important that readers do not open their gifts until they have reached the corresponding page. We want the reader to open that same tin can as is mentioned in the book and pull out the exact necklace that is described in the book. It’s the experience of bringing the book to reality.”
Hello Subscription’s review of Once Upon a Book Club gushes, “This is a great subscription to add a new book to your shelf every month, with the gifts that are not just attractive but useful at the same time! I think the concept of this subscription is exciting and fun – I loved the idea that I could only open the gifts after reading the corresponding page. Having goodies to open along with the text added an additional layer of suspense to the novel.”
