Founded in 2006, Rebecca Michaels started Violet Love after struggling to find a headband that suited her needs. An avid runner and fashion lover, Michaels wanted a headband that was functional while also embodying her unique style. She was unable to find one, so decided to utilize her degree in Environmental Engineering from Penn State University to create her own. Michaels sewed together what would be the first prototypes of her idea, and after realizing how perfectly they suited her needs, and how many other people desired the same, she knew she had created something special.
Michaels went on to commission a local seamstress to sew the headbands, using the proper fabrics for her design. She met with local stores who were interested in carrying her headbands, and within a few months, over 20 retail stores had partnered with her to sell the headbands. With the local success of her headband design, Michaels applied for Surf Expo, a reputable watersports and beach lifestyle tradeshow in Orange County. In addition to featuring unique new brands, the expo also chooses the top 10 new products of the year, and chose Michaels’ headband as one of the top designs.
Fully realizing the success of her innovative design, Michaels decided to take a leap of faith and quit her job as an engineer to work on her designs and grow her business. It proved to be the right decision, and her business exploded. She won the Surf Expo for a second year in a row, and her designs expanded to include a variety of prints. Ten years later, the brand continues to grow, and fans continually fall in love with her unique and stunning designs.
During the whole process, Michaels has remained dedicated to her environmentally friendly values. She uses green printing processes to make sure her business does its part, from reusing important parts, to recycling ingredients, to even energy-efficient production.
