Author Jaclyn Douma’s Cookbook Helps Newlyweds Provide Delicious Home Cooked Meals on a Budget

When Jaclyn Douma married her husband in the fall of 2007, she never dreamed that she would be writing a cookbook for newlyweds in her first year of marriage. Working as Marketing Director for a restaurant in California, she and her husband made the move to Arizona the year they were married. Jaclyn’s joys from being creative and frustrations with her mother never writing down recipes — combined with her passion for hosting — gave her the inspiration to organize her own collection of recipes to share with others. Jaclyn also realized that many of her friends did not have opportunities to learn in the kitchen growing up. She wanted to provide a useful tool for them and others new to the kitchen, which resulted in the publication of her cookbook, Our First Year: Cost Effective Recipes from the Home of Newlyweds.
Working solely from home, Jaclyn uses social media to market her book. As a result of distributed self-written press releases, Jaclyn received coverage from local news stations and media outlets. She was featured in live television appearances on Local Channel 3, ABC 15 and Channel 12. She was also featured in the Phoenix Business Journal, Real Weddings Magazine, and on online blogs and WEtv — regarding cost-effective recipes and the ability to appeal to those getting married.
In 2011, Jaclyn won a contest hosted by Paula Deen and the Real Women of Philadelphia. Her “One Maple Bar, Please!” original recipe is now a full page feature in their Real Women of Philadelphia Season 2 cookbook.
Douma has joined the team of Sugar Loco, a website devoted to desserts as a contributing writer. Douma also continues to grow her name in the food industry through book signings, cooking demonstrations, and social media.
Working from home has given Douma the opportunity to fulfill all of her dreams as a mother and wife and to take her joyful passion and turn it into a career. In the future, Jaclyn hopes to see her book in the hands of newlyweds across the country, giving them the confidence to provide delicious home cooked meals on a budget.
