In July 2014, Home Business Magazine first highlighted Brian “Coach B” Arrington’s early journey into sports/talk radio, featuring the launch of his new grassroots sports show, created, produced, and sold entirely from his home office. His would first be profile in the magazine back in 2001, covering the successful home-based record label he built.
Growing tired of the record business, Arrington pivoted to radio. His new project debuted on a small independent radio station in San Bernardino, California. Arrington combined passion, determination, and entrepreneurial grit to lay the groundwork for what would grow into the number one sports/talk radio show in the Inland Empire (Riverside/San Bernardino, CA) market.
More than a decade later, Arrington’s story is one of perseverance, evolution, and full-circle triumph. “Going back to my time running my record label, I started out doing everything from my home office,” Arrington recalls. “(To this day) I hold all of my sales calls, I do my editing, schedule interviews, building my brand, it all happens at my house.”
The turning point for his broadcast career came when FOX Sports Radio entered the market. Recognizing an opportunity to elevate his show to a broader audience, Arrington boldly approached the network with a proposal to bring his show under the FOX Sports Radio banner. The pitch was successful.
“Getting the show on FOX Sports was a major milestone,” he says. “We became the number one rated sports/talk radio show in the region, and we kept that position for eight years straight.”
Under the FOX Sports Radio umbrella, Arrington expanded his audience, his sponsors, and influence. The show featured coverage of local high school sports, interviews with top athletes and coaches. Yet, despite the expanded reach and prestige, Arrington continued to run his business like he always had, from home.
“I may have been on a major station, but I was still working out of my home office,” Arrington says. “It’s where I’m most productive. I’ve been using the same desk and setup for over twenty years.”
In late 2024, another life-changing opportunity emerged, this time in the form of radio ownership. A station in the Palm Springs market—just east of the Inland Empire—1270 AM, became available for purchase. With his connections with FOX Sports Radio, Brian ‘Coach B’ Arrington knew there was only one brand he wanted to affiliate with. So, he took the leap from radio show host to station owner, along with his wife, Brandi, they both knew this would be a huge undertaking, and the two were undeterred by the new challenge. They believed in the power of their vision and invested accordingly.
“My wife and I used the equity from our home to purchase the station,” Arrington shares. “It was a big risk, but it’s something we felt called to do. We saw it as not just a business investment, but a legacy move for our family. Our three kids, Briana, Brian, II and Brandon all now work with us at the radio station.”
The couple rebranded the station to FOX Sports 1270 AM/Palm Springs. In addition to broadcasting some of the biggest names in sports including Dan Patrick, Colin Cowherd and Doug Gottelib, the station runs 24/7 FOX Sports Radio programming and local programming. The husband-and-wife pride themselves on bringing with them their homegrown values and commitment to community.
“Even with us having a physical radio station studio, I still operate as a home-based business,” he says. “I run all my sales efforts and host most virtual and phone meetings from my home office, the same space where I started this journey.”
Brian “Coach B” Arrington goal is to be a testament to what can happen when passion meets persistence and when a home office becomes the birthplace of a media powerhouse. From pitching sponsors over the phone to owning and operating a FOX Sports affiliate with his wife, Arrington embodies the spirit of home-based entrepreneurship.
“I never forgot where I came from,” he says. “No matter how big the station gets, it all started at home. And that’s still where I do my best work.”
As we revisit his broadcasting journey more than a decade after his last Home Business Magazine feature, Arrington’s story remains a powerful reminder: success doesn’t always start in a boardroom. Sometimes, it starts at your kitchen table.
