Choosing a lawyer is never an easy task. You want to make sure you are choosing the right one for your needs. Mike G Law introduces three important steps in selecting a good business lawyer for your company, including determining your company’s legal needs, referrals from colleagues and friends, and comparing lawyers to choose the best one for your company.
Determine Your Company’s Legal Needs
It is important to determine your legal needs. What types of cases will they be handling? It can include contract negotiations, drafting agreements and purchase orders, or even lawsuits if necessary. The business lawyer should have significant experience in the type of work you need. You do not want someone who has never seen a trademark infringement case trying to handle one on your behalf!
Ask for Referrals from Colleagues and Friends Who Have Hired Lawyers Before
You can also ask for referrals from friends and colleagues who have hired lawyers before. If you can, speak with the persons they worked with directly to gain insight into their personalities and their knowledge of your specific industry.
Once you find some possible candidates, it is important to set up meetings or phone calls to speak in-depth about your case or legal needs. During these conversations, pay attention to whether the lawyer has any knowledge of your field and whether or not they are easy to talk to and communicate with effectively! For example, my assistant found a great candidate through one of our employees at another company who had used them several times successfully for patent law issues related to technology companies like ours. This specific lawyer was extremely easy to talk with, and it came out that the lawyer had even gone to one of the same schools as my assistant!
Interview at Least Three Different Lawyers to Compare
Lastly, you should interview at least three different lawyers before deciding on which one to work with. They do not need to be expensive but just good enough that they can represent your company in court if necessary without any hesitation. You can even ask them what their favorite cases were so far! It will give you an idea of how passionate they are about the type of law they practice, as well as whether or not it is a fit for your company’s needs. Some may appear excited by this question while others become very shy and modest when speaking about themselves — so pay attention! Finally, make sure both parties feel comfortable working together because otherwise, it could lead to issues down the line.
A lawyer can work either alone, in a small firm where they provide legal advice, or as a larger group. The size and location of law firms should also play into your decision-making process. A large business like ours needs to find an experienced and well-connected firm that will handle our matters quickly and efficiently at all levels; we cannot afford for something to fall through the cracks!
If you are looking for a business lawyer, follow these three steps to find the right one. A lot goes into choosing the best lawyer for your company’s needs, and finding someone who is just as passionate about their work as you are can be difficult. The decision should never be taken lightly, but once it has been made, there will be a peace of mind knowing that your legal needs have been met professionally and great satisfaction in knowing that this person shares your passion.
