Retaining good employees in today’s business world takes more than providing a paycheck. As the modern workforce evolves, employees are becoming motivated by the desire to have a deeper purpose  and leaders are taking note. One of the ways employers can create a desirable work culture is through team building. Through a series of motivational bonding events, teams build skills like communication, planning, problem-solving and conflict resolution.

Tom Haughton, the VP of the Winnipeg-based My Place Realty, is an expert in this area, offering more than 20 years of expertise in human resources, customer service and procurement. He also brings decades of experience in team building and employee retention.

“I have spent 20 years training and developing teams to run various departments within retail and wholesale environments,” he said in a recent interview. “At My Place Realty, I work hand-in-hand with my senior management team to oversee everything from construction management to finance AND TO property management.”

My Place Realty is focused on providing quality homes to residents of Winnipeg, including both modern and heritage styles. Their mission statement is to strive for excellence in buying, renovating, customer service and proactive multi-family homes leasing. My Place Realty achieves this through their core values of respect, accountability and forward thinking, as well as through their one-team mentality approach to operations, which cultivates a work environment where everyone can seamlessly work together.

Over the past several years, Tom Haughton has helped My Place Realty strategically promote better communication and understanding. He has done so through six key tenets of team management: understanding, goal setting, incentives, collaboration, being a team player and independence.

“Building a successful team mentality in a workplace can help create a positive atmosphere in any company,” Haughton said. “Creating an environment where feedback and the sharing of ideas are welcomed and developing relationships can help employees cultivate a one-team mentality.”

Outside of work, in addition to spending time with his family, Tom Haughton is active in the greater Winnipeg community through his volunteer work and donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society, Lighthouse Mission and the Canadian Cancer Society.

The team at My Place Realty is also active in the community, taking part and supporting in worthy causes such as the Main Street Project, Lighthouse Mission, the Chimney Swift Bird Habitat as well as holding regular tenant giveaways in their monthly ‘Love Your Home’ contest.
