Once you finally secure the apartment, condo, or house you’ve always wanted, and you’ve made sure you can afford it and that it has good bones, you’ll inevitably have to decorate. This can be the most exciting step, but also the most daunting. If you already have some staples, there are a few simple things you can do to get your new home looking both stylish and cozy. It won’t take a village or a fortune to do it.

Update your lighting.

One of the easiest ways to completely revamp a space is by updating or changing existing lighting fixtures. Lighting is one of the essential elements of interior design and for a good reason. Having interesting mood lighting in your home can change the entire vibe for the better.

If you’ve recently moved into a fully updated home, chances are there are more than a few unsightly bright light bulbs already installed. These remodeled buildings usually use the most readily available or the cheapest to buy and install. There’s a simple fix to give the rooms of your home, including your home office, more of a subtler mood. You can either purchase light bulbs that already work on three modes (warmest to brightest), or you can always adjust accordingly.

There’s no immediate need to adjust all your lighting to dimmers. Alternately, you can always add lamps instead of using overhead lighting. This will help your lighting situation, as well as generally expand the accessories included in your decor. The more creative, the better!

Add varying textures.

By adding an array of textures to your home, you can simply add a touch of individual style while creating a space that doesn’t feel or look sterile. Even minimalists support this trick. Some simple ways to add texture is with accent pillows, baskets and wire, metals, and blankets. This is relatively easy to do and can transform a room by layering. By adding textures that are soft to the touch, like a throw on the couch in your home office, you can up the comfy level significantly.

Rearrange to your heart’s content.

Rearranging furniture can revamp a room without spending any money. In fact, rearranging furniture every few months can keep your space feeling fresh and help with your cleaning regimen. This way, when friends visit your home, they can feel like they are walking into a new space every few months. Many interior design aficionados recommend feng shui when rearranging a room, as it can bring improved energy to the overall home. Being creative with your placement and utilizing space can make way for a functional and updated look.

Add an accent wall.

An accent wall can be a game-changer in interior design. Simply by painting one wall of the house, you can change the way a room feels and how it’s presented to guests. It doesn’t just have to be a wall either. Some choose to accent the backsplash on their countertops, the island in their kitchen, or even their door frames.

Instead of looking at what others are doing, experiment on your own. You may be surprised at what you find. You can customize your home easily as you can order custom-printed packaging tape nowadays.
