7 Killer Tips for Maintaining Your Garage Doors

It is very inconvenient to deal with a stuck garage door when you are running late. To ensure your garage door operates well, maintain it frequently. The technician doing the maintenance needs to be qualified. At times, the weather outside will be poor, and getting out of the car to open a garage door is a hassle. Furthermore, when a garage door is faulty, it can injure you or your children.

Replacing a garage door can be expensive — it is always better to repair a garage door before it wears out. Here are tips for maintaining your garage door.

Lubricate the Door’s Moving Parts

Lubricating the hinges will prevent your door from making noise, and thus will operate correctly. When lubricating, use a spray lubricant to grease all the door openers, including the screws. If you lubricate the door’s rollers, tracks, and hinges, you will prevent damage caused by friction. During this lubrication process, you can identify loose nuts and tighten them. The lubricant you use needs to not interfere with the paint.

Test Your Door’s Balance

Balancing the door allows the opener to operate smoother each time you close or open the door. Check your door’s balance by disconnecting the opener and pulling the release handle. Then open the door halfway. If the door is balanced, it will maintain the position without your help. If your door falls off, then it is best to adjust the spring tensions. You can always consult with a technician to determine if your garage is balanced.

Testing the Out-Reverse Feature Is Essential

The auto-reverse protects you from injury. Test it at least once a year to verify that it works. For example, you can place a large piece of brick under the door; this will help you know if your door functions when it comes into contact with an object. If your door has a photoelectric system, then you can test it by activating the door, then stepping underneath the door. If you find that the door has a problem, then you may need to consult with an overhead garage door repair agent to look at it.

Inspect the Door Parts for Damage

The more you use your garage, the more the rollers and the cables become damaged. It will save you a lot if you inspect the door regularly to prevent wear and tear. Besides checking hinges and joints regularly, make sure to tighten loose screws and replace them before your door falls.

Clean the Tracks

Insects and debris tend to accumulate in the track of your garage door. You should sweep out the path and remove obstacles so the roller can run smoothly. Remember, you need to be careful not to remove the necessary lubricant from the trunk. If you remove lubricants, friction will increase, leading to degradation of the track and roller.

Check the Lift Cables

The more you use the garage, the more the cable gets dirty and wears out. Inspect and confirm how the wires are doing. You can use a fine bristle brush to remove dirt from the cables. If you feel the cables need replacing, consult with a technician. Avoid repairing the wires as they contain high tension, which can be dangerous to you.

Test the Safety Feature

Garage doors have different safety features to prevent people from getting injured. Test the controlling features set in a controlled setting. You can use a broom to confirm if the infrared is safe.

The garage opener also needs maintenance. Check the batteries and replace them if their power level is low. However, if there is an area that requires repairing, it is best to consult with an overhead garage door repair agent to look at it and advise on the way forward.

You can also confirm if your home opener warranty is active.
