Cosmetic dentistry is a highly lucrative field to enter, and Dr. Joseph Goodman has made a major name for himself in the industry. Originally from Germany, he established his main office in Beverly Hills in 2003 and has since then become the go-to cosmetic dentist for stars like Piers Morgan. He was also the featured dentist for an episode of The Doctors TV show and lectures about cosmetic and reconstructive dentistry all over the world!
Home Business Magazine had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Joseph Goodman about his brand and business journey. He also shared some helpful tips for other aspiring entrepreneurs in the cosmetic dental industry! HBM: Tell us about the Dr. Goodman brand. What sets it apart from other (cosmetic) dentistries within the market, and beyond?
Dr. Goodman: “I think what sets me apart from other cosmetic dentists is that I care about my patients and what they want, while also making sure that they are completely informed about each process of their smile makeovers. Many times, I see miscommunication and misunderstandings getting in the way. For example, the veneers are overly white or too big on patients (who then come to me to fix these mistakes). It was not communicated well with the previous dentist.
On the other hand, I use my years of experience to offer my advice and expertise to give my patients their desired look. I don’t just want my patients to be happy with their smile for right now, but rather, over their lifetime. Every patient has my personal cell phone number and can reach me at any time, which they often do. This is personalized dental care, which patients highly appreciate.
In addition, I am often called by KTLA, amongst other media outlets, to come to the studio as a smile expert and provide my expertise. The Dr. Phil show also regularly calls our office to restore show guests’ teeth before they go on air. I’m happy that I am trusted by beauty pageants like Ms. Beverly Hills, Ms. California, and the like to enhance their smiles before their big day, the crowning of a beauty queen. It’s an amazing feeling to see a beautiful person being crowned knowing I played a part in that.”
HBM: How did the idea for your business come about? What is the continued inspiration behind the company and all that you do?
Dr. Goodman: “I moved to the United States from Germany when I was a young man with my DMD and a dream of opening my own practice. I hadn’t started my family then, but I knew I wanted to leave a legacy behind. I wanted to be known for my great dental achievements and to be the best in my field. I did not come to the US to be average; I wanted to stand out. I am continuously inspired by my family to keep up that hard work and continue to build and rebuild my brand, earning the title, ‘Top Beverly Hills Dentist’.”
HBM: What has been your biggest achievement thus far?
Dr. Goodman: “I would have to say, learning the business aspect of opening a private practice. Oftentimes, aspiring dentists want to work for themselves so badly after school, but we were taught how to be dentists, not businessmen. Learning the business aspects of running a successful practice is very important, even more so than your craftsmanship. In short, it is crucial to keep it all together, between the patients, dental labs, staff and all other moving parts of the business.
I’ve been doing this for over 20 years and I’ve mastered my art. My biggest achievement thus far has been having the ability to juggle staying current in my craft knowledge, while also staying updated on private practice business models. This has made it easier to manage my practice in a way that’s beneficial. I have been able to sustain my private practice for more than 20 years, and my team is steadily growing each and every year!
In 2016, I was approached by the Royal family of the UAE to become a visiting doctor. A visiting doctor is a chosen and trusted doctor that is flown out to provide medical/dental service in a new country. In my case, I was working in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. I sent out my lab cases to Germany, and while waiting for the lab work to be finalized, I was able to explore the beautiful cities and get to know their cultures.
Dubai and Abu Dhabi are amazing cities and working there was an amazing accomplishment, which lead to many more invites to other countries.
HBM: What has been your biggest challenge you’ve overcome?
Dr. Goodman: “My biggest personal challenge has been being able to offer and explain to my patients a more holistic and healthy dental care alternative. Our full body health is of utmost importance and if I can help by using safer practices in my office to ensure my patients have both a beautiful smile and the best overall care I can provide, then I’m doing my job properly. We use mercury-free and phthalates free composite resin for teeth colored fillings. I strive to provide the best, healthiest dental experience for my patients.”
HBM: What is your biggest tip for other aspiring entrepreneurs within the dental / cosmetic dentistry industries? Why?
Dr. Goodman: “The best advice that I can give to an aspiring dentist would have to be… Be determined. It’s not an easy field and it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to perfect your craft! There are so many dentists, and you always need to make sure that your knowledge and craft puts you ahead of everyone else. Study and learn the newest techniques, be competitive and updated in the latest technology, and offer your patients the best dental care you can. I like to go by this quote by GV Black, the father of modern dentistry: ‘The professional man has no right to be other than a continuous student.'”
