This holiday season, introduce friends and family to a brand whose fashion forward creations are saving communities, energy, and the environment. Indigo Handloom is a sustainable apparel brand creating the most luxurious, toxin-free fabric in the world. Each of their pieces is made by skilled artisans in India who weave by hand using zero electricity and producing zero emissions.
“The fashion industry is the second biggest polluter after the oil industry, using up to 8000 chemicals on their clothing,” says Indigo Handloom founder Smita Paul. “Those chemicals rub against your skin all day and are absorbed into the body. We’re giving people an alternative that’s safe for them, their families, and the people who handle the clothing.”
All of Indigo Handloom’s garments are dyed with low-impact dyes, fixed so they won’t bleed, and sometimes treated with a natural starch made with rice. They’re then washed with a mild detergent and a fabric softener if needed. That’s it–as pure and natural as possible.
Currently, Indigo Handloom offers three unique collections:
- Scarves – These beautiful, one-of-a-kind scarves feature captivating patterns in a full range of hues from vibrant chartreuse to moody red to sophisticated cream.
- Clothing – Elegant tops, breezy tunics, and eye-catching dresses abound in this stylish women’s collection. Each piece is bursting with color and detail.
- Nightgowns – While not yet available to the public, their newest offering will launch on Kickstarter in early 2017. Each nightgown is made with non-GMO, certified organic cotton and silk. These pure fibers let the body detox at night, resulting in more restful and revitalizing sleep.
Indigo Handloom’s scarves can be found at fine gift and home stores as well as at renowned art museums including SFMOMA, De Young, and The Met. All other pieces can be purchased online.
Smita Paul founded Indigo Handloom Inc. in 2003 to aid the talented artisans of rural India while reshaping the fashion industry for the better.Handloom weaving creates nine times as many jobs as machine-made cloth, and Indigo Handloom alone has employed over 500 weavers. This year has seen the brand win the Brooklyn Fashion and Design Accelerator People’s Choice Award honoring heritage and craft, as well as a partnership with Athleta. Their products are proudly sourced and created in India, and designed and distributed in Oakland, California.
