Vesting cliff, total addressable market, network effect, back-channel… Thousands of entrepreneurs flock to Silicon Valley every year, trying to get their projects funded. While many come with great ideas, loads of passion, and stellar skills, they often have difficulty cracking the unique language used by the power players in town.
When it comes to startup fundraising, knowing the lingo is important. It says you’ve done your homework, and aren’t an “off-the-grid” entrepreneur. That you understand the way VCs work, and that you’ll be easy for them to deal with.
Rochelle Kopp and Steven Ganz know the value of startup jargon well. Earlier this year, they published Valley Speak: Deciphering the Jargon of Silicon Valley, a book dedicated to helping future founders learn the secrets of “Valley Speak.” The book has made headlines around the world with articles in the The Wall Street Journal, Time, The Hollywood Reporter, Forbes, Business Insider, TechInAsia, the front page of The San Jose Mercury News and many more.
The success of the book prompted Kopp and Ganz to create another project aimed at helping people teach themselves Silicon Valley startup vocabulary easily. Startup Jargon Flashcards launched on Kickstarter this week. The project allows users to pre-order both a physical deck, which includes 52 key Silicon Valley terms, with a heavy focus on the words that most often get used in the funding process, and a digital version that covers all 646 words from the Valley Speak book.
Kopp and Ganz believe these cards will streamline the learning process for anyone who wants to become fluent in Valley Speak in a flash! Kopp commented that she and Ganz “are excited to offer this new tool to help entrepreneurs get up to speed with startup jargon!”
The Kickstarter campaign for Startup Jargon Flashcards offers a variety of fun rewards and pre-order options. The campaign runs from now until November 30, 2016.
