Everyone has their vices, from the smallest ones to the larger indulgences. A big issue with these bad habits is the fact that they tend to make us feel good. We can become addicted to the feeling, despite feelings of guilt after deciding to not do it again.
Despite the comfort a home provides, it’s fertile ground to inspire bad habits. Let’s see how we can help ourselves. Whether it’s eating that cake or having that extra beer, the temptation is there and doesn’t go away that easily. The main goal is to not act upon the temptation. These are techniques you can use to help you.
Remove triggers:
Everyone has something that triggers their bad habits. The triggers differ from person to person, even if the habit is the same. This means you need to identify your triggers. A trigger at home could be as simple as how the furniture is arranged, or what you’re watching on TV, or the times you do certain things. Any small change you can make at home can lessen temptation.
Remove stress:
It’s pretty much impossible to remove stress all the time, since it’s usually something that happens on a daily basis, whether it’s from work or other life factors. You know when stress is beginning to build up. You’ll notice it with tight muscles and a headache. Stress and other factors such as hunger or anger or loneliness can turn small cravings into huge urges. This is often the case with severe addictions as in drugs or alcohol. If nothing seems to be working to control the urges, then seriously consider locating rehab centers near you.
Remove boredom:
Not surprisingly, boredom can usually lead us to do something even when we’re trying our best to avoid that something. Watching TV or surfing the net is often not that effective since eventually you’ll get bored of those activities too. Try to create a to-do list, but not of dreaded chores, but rather of the things you like to do at home. That could be cooking or brushing up on an old hobby or picking up a new one.
No changes produce no change
Quitting a bad habit needs change and if you don’t try to change things, you won’t change. Many times we’re home much more than we’d like to be, like when weather conditions make it more difficult to go out. That’s why it’s important to have some sort of action plan to follow when a temptation kicks in while you’re at home.
