There’s a popular saying that if you find a job you love, then you will never work a day in your life. Many people don’t believe this saying, or are afraid to break from “the norm” to find and pursue a career that they truly love. If you are interested in choosing a business that you truly love, use these tips and questions to help guide you towards your ideal career path.
What are you naturally good at?
Being able to find or build a business around your natural strengths is a great place to start your ideal career search. When you’re able to employ your natural strengths on a daily basis, you are more likely to feel fulfilled, fully utilized, and happy in your work.
So take a moment to think, or even write down: what are your natural skills? Are you a problem-solver? A creative type? A numbers person? Do you enjoy talking to people? Are you a good writer? Are you a good public speaker? Make a list of all the things that you are good at, and see how you can translate those to business skills. There are also a number of strength finder quizzes and tests you can take online to learn more about your natural aptitudes. Figure out what you are good at, and then start to look for businesses that align with your strengths.
What are you passionate about?
Passion also plays a key role in starting a company that you love. Passion is what helps you get out of bed in the morning – knowing that you’re going to do something that makes a difference, and that fuels your soul. A great way to figure out your passions is to think about what you really enjoy and what really makes you happy. And then start thinking about how you can turn that passion into a career for life.
Another great way of thinking about passion is to consider causes that you care about. Is there something that the world needs that you can help contribute towards? Are there charities or nonprofit organizations that are meaningful to you? Do you have a deep desire to help other people? How can you use your unique blend of strengths, passions and gifts to make a greater contribution to the world around you? These qualities all culminate in your purpose.
The best way to really find a business you love is to get to know yourself and spend some time asking the questions that will help you determine where you want to be in life. Choosing a profession doesn’t have to be conventional – it can be very creative, and very customized to you.
There is always an opportunity for you to start your own business. We truly live in the age of the entrepreneur and there are so many ways to create a business you love on your own terms. Spend some time reflecting on what you could offer to the world, and then make an effort to monetize it.
