As one of the founding partners of Innovative Dining Group (IDG), Lee Maen is a true visionary in the restaurant scene. Maen and IDG have launched some of the most successful and legendary restaurants in the Los Angeles, Scottsdale, and Las Vegas markets, such as Katana in West Hollywood and Sushi Roku (which pioneered the modern sushi movement). IDG also boasts international establishments, such as BOA Steakhouse in Abu Dhabi.

Lee Maen brings extraordinary real estate and business talents to IDG, enabling the company to continuously expand their horizons. Home Business Magazine had the opportunity to catch up with Maen, who discussed the characteristics of a successful restaurant, tips for entrepreneurs who want to enter the hospitality industry amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and more.

HBM: Could you tell us about your company and the restaurants that you own?

LM: “All of our venues reflect bold, modern interpretations of traditional concepts, reflective of how we like to dine. We have amazing chefs that create menus with signature items that always land on the must-eat list in each market. Each of our restaurants combine exceptional cuisine with beautifully designed atmospheres allowing for a true escape.”

HBM: What are the characteristics of a successful restaurant?

LM: “Food, service, and a cutting-edge design are key, but what sets us apart is creating a vibe, an escape, so to speak, that you can’t buy. We combined that with a commitment to treat everyone like rock stars, from the local secretary to the latest TikTok star, to the CEO next door. Everyone is special when they walk through our doors.”

HBM: How can an entrepreneur create buzz about a new restaurant they launched?

LM: “The old adage of word of mouth being key is so true. Giving people a great night out is going to generate far more buzz than any advertising campaign.”

HBM: Do you have any other helpful tips for entrepreneurs who want to enter the hospitality industry, especially during the pandemic we are currently facing?

LM: “You can’t go in thinking you are going to invent something completely brand new. Your goal is to reinvent and do it differently—better, faster, cheaper… whatever your goal. Your magic will be in altering something that already exists with your personal passion. Do something you love with the thought that others will love it too.”
